Chennai (formerly known as Madras) is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal, it is the biggest industrial and commercial centre in South India and a major cultural, economic and educational centre. According to the provisional results of 2011 census, the city had 4.68 million residents, making it the sixth most populous city in India (The area of Chennai was expanded in 2011. The figure represented here is calculated according to the old city limits (176 Sq Km) as the revised figures pertaining to 426 Sq Km are awaited.); the urban agglomeration, which comprises the city and its suburbs, was home to approximately 8.9 million, making it the fourth most populous metropolitan area in the country and 31st largest urban area in the world.

Marina Beach is a natural urban beach in the city of Chennai, India, along theBay of Bengal, part of the Indian Ocean. The beach runs from near Fort St. George in the north to Besant Nagar in the south, a distance of 13 km (8.1 mi), making it the longest natural urban beach in the country and the world's second longest. |

Chennai is in second place for literacy among metropolitan city centres in India with a 90.33 percent literacy rate. Marina Beach runs for 6 km (3.7 mi), spanning along the shoreline of the city between the deltas of Cooum and Adyar, and is the second longest urban beach in the world. Elliot's Beach lies south of the Adyar delta.

The city has an estimated 4.5 percent of its area under green cover. The largest among the parks is the 358-acre Tholkappia Poonga, developed to restore the fragile ecosystem of the Adyar estuary. The horticulture department-owned Semmozhi Poonga is an 20-acre botanical garden located in the downtown. With temples, beaches and centres of historical and cultural significance, including the UNESCO Heritage Site of Mahabalipuram, Chennai remains the most visited city in India.

In Chennai there is a very famous Shia Masjid / Mosque called 'Masjid e Jami'e Abbasi' and it is famously known as Thousand Lights Mosque, it is one of the Landmark in Chennai city and located in the main Business hub of the City. Baargah e Hazrath Abul Fazlil Abbas (as) is attached to this Masjid.

In Chennai alone there are 8 Shia Mohalla's with Masjid's and Aashurkhana's. The 8 Mohalla's are Thousand Lights, Royapettah, Perambur, Triplicane, Parrys, Pallavaram, Pudupet and Hussainabaad. Among these mohallas Thousand Lights is the Markaz for all of us. |
